Microsoft Windows Home Server OEM
It's time to brush the digital dust off your captured moments and media—for good. Introducing a simpler, smarter way for families to organize, share and protect photos, videos, music and much more. Windows Home Server brings it all together in a central hub, connecting your home PCs and making it easy to keep and enjoy your family's most important memories. Grandma will love it too.
Restore files, folders, and entire computers easily
That video of your baby's first steps isn't gone forever. Windows Home Server can bring back individual files or folders for any computer in your home, using snapshots of previous versions of important files or folders that might have been accidentally deleted or modified. You can even rescue a PC that's had an unfortunate accident, effectively turning back the clock and fully restoring the old system.
Secure your stuff with Automatic Backups
Imagine the peace of mind that comes from automatic daily backups. Windows Home Server helps keep your family's important files safe, backing up every computer in your home, every day. Your files and folders are automatically duplicated across multiple hard drives, so even if one fails, you can still recover what's important.
Keep your PCs running in tip-top shape
Your family's PCs stay healthy with home network health monitoring. You can see the exact condition of the computers in your home and make sure everyone's software and virus definitions are up-to-date.
Protect your files from prying eyes
Windows Home Server sits behind your firewall and has strong password controls to help secure your home network. You decide who sees what, so you can share what you want and keep the rest private.
Stream photos, music, and videos
Keep in tune with what your kids are listening to. Now the whole family can enjoy each other's music, from your wife's jazz standbys to your daughter's new favorite pop song. Use your Xbox 360 or other supported digital media receiver to listen to your family's shared music collection, watch a photo slideshow, or catch up on recorded TV shows and movies.
Keep it together
Stop wondering where last year's Christmas pictures ended up and put your family photos where you can all see them. Get and stay organized with a single, easy-to-access location for all your important files.
Share photos, music, and videos
Turn your home into a digital democracy. With Windows Home Server, everyone in your family can create and access shared folders of photos, music, and movies from any PC in your network. You can also share music through your Xbox 360 or digital music receiver.
Add more space whenever you need it
Now you don't have to choose between your photo albums and music albums. You'll have all the space you need—simply connect a new hard drive to your Windows Home Server. Of course, all your family's videos, photos, and music are still safely stored together.
Do more with your home server now and in the future
Imagine controlling your home security system through Windows Home Server. Designed with new products and services like this in mind, Windows Home Server will keep growing and getting better. Software and hardware developers are already working on innovative add-ins, such as home webcams, family information management software, home automation, and other innovations that work with your home server.
Easily share from anywhere
Use your free Internet address to share digital memories and more with anyone you want. All they'll need is Web access, a browser, and a log-in password from you. And don't worry about Mom getting a hold of the wrong pictures; you decide who gets to see what with a simple drag and drop.
Connect to your home server from virtually anywhere
With Windows Home Server, home is just a click away. You can connect remotely to the computers in your home and access all your files, even run applications, just as if you were sitting in front of your home computer.
Get to files easily
Stop the spread of digital clutter. When you store all your files together, you can get to them as quickly and easily as if they were on your PC's hard drive. Windows Home Server uses a familiar interface that integrates with all your home computers.

Home Computer Backup and Restore
Windows Home Server will automatically back up your home computers to the home server and allow you to easily restore the entire computer or an individual file or folder to a previous point in time. The Windows Home Server Backup solution uses an innovative method to back up only the data that has not already been backed up before. Even if you have several copies of the same data on different computers, the data is backed up only once on your home server and your home server keeps track of what data was stored on each home computer on each day. This makes it very efficient in terms of the time it takes for backups to complete and also the amount of space that is used on your home server.
Automated Daily Backup of your Home Computers
Computer backups are automatically configured when you install the Windows Home Server Connector software on your computers. Backup is performed on a daily basis for every configured computer.
Restore an Entire Home Computer
Restoring a home computer to a previous point in time is easy. If you want to restore your computer to a previous point in time, you boot the home computer from the Home Computer Restore CD. The computer will connect to your home server and provide a simple wizard for restoring a single hard drive or multiple hard drives from a backup of that computer that is stored on your home server.
Restore Individual Files and Folders
You can also restore individual files or folders by selecting a home computer and a specific backup of that computer from the Windows Home Server Console application. A Windows Explorer window is displayed with the files and folders that were backed up for that computer on that day. You can easily drag and drop individual files or entire folders from this Windows Explorer window and store them on your Windows Desktop or another location on your home computer.

This product is great for backing up all my pc's and for accessing files on my local network. But if you plan to use remote access make sure your ISP is not blocking all your ports. I thought just port 80 was block but it turns out my ISP blocks every port and I need to upgrade to the business package to get them unblocked

Locating reliable drivers for WHS is proving to be a challenge. I build a new system just for WHS using an Asus MB with a gigabit port on it. I drivers for that port are not WHS specific.
After much research on the WHS Forum, it appears to be an issue with the gigbit port. As of last week, Asus has not release any WHS or even Server 2003 drivers for their MB, so my WHS box continues to kick offline from time to time when moving large files.
This is a fantastic product

Sure if you want to go beyond what microsof offer you will have to learn but for what the package said no, outside of reading the how to reinstall from bear metal a crash computer, I am even in the beta phase right now with SP3 and it work with all the PC from home edition to vista to windows 7 RC and soon for me the RTM (22 October 2009) release date.
Installation was a breeze and if you are not sure that it will work on your old box, download the free trial and you will be able to update from it to the retail version after so nothing to loose.
If you are a MAC you could still use it and yes it is like a mac for the plug and just let it sit there do it job and never have to worry and it have a backup freature for the server itself if ever wanted or needed, so this is a total backup solution and it stream video and media file very well in addition to it primary role.
You will not be disapointed.
i'm love'n it!

Well before I order it the softwsre i look at the reviews and I was impressed what it got, so now I bought it myself and wow it is an awsome product! I was so impressed how it work I even added my mother and brothers to the remote server so they too can enjoy family pics and videos. I am very please with this microsoft product. I gave the features a 4 because I was hoping it had other features like e-mail service, but all and all it's an awsome product.
* The above
values are for physical, not usable memory.
The amount of
memory that your system reports, is not always the amount of actual installed
memory. For example, if you have 4GB installed, 32 bit versions of Windows will
typically report 3.2GB due to a limitation of Windows itself. Also note
that different Windows programs report available and maximum memory differently,
which can be confusing. If you find that you need more memory, we suggest
expanding your system memory, since this is the most effective performance
increase, and the one that is easiest to perform.
