be careful, Toshiba is the worst. They make insanely crappy products. And the tech support is horrid. I had a bad experience with their laptop hard drives, two in a row. Both died the same way. Started making clunking noises like an old broke down car before they kicked themselves dead. Dont waste your money, buy an HP, much better value!
Solid and as described!

This is my third Toshiba. It is as solid as my two previous and runs as flawlessly as I expect from this brand. This laptop has the weight and portability of a netbook while having the computing power of a desktop replacement. The display is particularly notable for its quality. The power and quality of a Portege for this price is hard to beat.

Toshiba Toshiba, a world leader in high
technology, is a diversified manufacturer and marketer of advanced
electronic and electrical products, spanning information & communications
equipment and systems, Internet-based solutions and services, electronic
components and materials, power systems, industrial and social
infrastructure systems, and household appliances.
Toshiba's early history has two strands: 1875 saw the establishment of
Tanaka Seizo-sho (Tanaka Engineering Works), Japan's first manufacturer of
telegraphic equipment. Its founder, Hisashige Tanaka (1799 - 1881), was
well known from his youth for inventions that included mechanical dolls
and a perpetual clock. Under the name Shibaura Seisaku-sho (Shibaura
Engineering Works), his company became one of Japan's largest
manufacturers of heavy electrical apparatus. In 1890, Hakunetsu-sha & Co.,
Ltd. was established as Japan's first plant for electric incandescent
lamps. Subsequent diversification saw the company evolve as a manufacturer
of consumer products. In 1899, the company was renamed Tokyo Denki (Tokyo
Electric Co.).
In 1939, these two companies, leaders in their respective fields, merged
to form an integrated electric equipment manufacturer, Tokyo Shibaura
Denki (Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd.). The company was soon well known
as 'Toshiba,' which became its official name in 1978.
By continually developing innovative
technologies centering on the fields of Electronics and Energy, Toshiba
strives to create products and services that enhance human life, and which
lead to a thriving, healthy society. They constantly seek new approaches
that help realize the goals of the world community, including ways to
improve the global environment.
In the office and in the home, on the
move, throughout today's connected world, Toshiba applies cutting-edge
capabilities to the creation of digital products and solutions that make a
difference. A determination to meet diverse market needs in the era of
digital convergence supports Toshiba in maintaining their leading position
in key digital product areas. Their product mix is optimized for
success in high-growth areas such as digital consumer products and mobile
equipment, and in key markets, including the fast growing markets of the
world. By delivering core infrastructure for power generation systems,
industrial systems and for essential social needs, Toshiba provides firm
foundations for society's well-being and continued progress.
As a corporate citizen of planet Earth,
Toshiba puts CSR (corporate social responsibility) at the heart of its
management. They prioritize respect for life and safety and full
compliance in all activities and by every employee. They see environmental
protection as particularly important. Through our “Environmental Vision
2050” and voluntary environmental action plan, they aim to increase
Toshiba Group’s overall eco-efficiency ten-fold by fiscal 2050, through
strict environmental management, cuts in CO2 emissions, delivering
environmentally-conscious products and promoting energy saving at their
facilities.
Today, Toshiba operates a global network
of subsidiaries and affiliates, with some 198,000 employees worldwide
engaged in all aspects of Toshiba’s business: from advanced research to
procurement, manufacturing,
and sales and marketing. Toshiba’s successful long-term global presence,
the very process of enhancing Toshiba’s globalization in fact, rests on
the highly capable and motivated local staff who commit to Toshiba.
Production at Toshiba Group’s worldwide manufacturing network, including
Toshiba Corporation’s 40-plus facilities, covers the company’s diverse
product portfolio, including leading-edge semiconductors, TVs, portable
PCs, data storage devices, consumer products and power plant systems.

What is Bluetooth?
Bluetooth wireless technology is a short-range communications technology
intended to replace the cables connecting portable and/or fixed devices while
maintaining high levels of security. The key features of Bluetooth technology
are robustness, low power, and low cost.
It’s more than seeing. It’s
believing.
Before wires, everything was wireless. Nature found ways to connect it
all—often on a very mysterious frequency. Bluetooth wireless technology
takes its prompt from nature: harmonious, intuitive, seamless. Products with
Bluetooth wireless technology communicate with a sense of purpose and
elegant efficiency. Today, Bluetooth wireless technology can eliminate
wires. In the future, it may make the word “wireless” entirely obsolete.
By then, Bluetooth freedom will be second nature.
Designed to make connectivity invisible and
reliable. A perfect convergence of extraordinary technology and elegant
simplicity. Hundreds of companies are on board. Thousands of engineers have
contributed. Standards have been set. Specifications have been approved.
More than one billion devices are in use. And people are experiencing just
how far they can go.
It’s integrating every dimension of
productivity.
Where do we work? Desk. Sofa. Car. Hotel. Kitchen. Plane. Yard. It’s not one
location; it’s everywhere. It’s not one application; it’s many. With
Bluetooth wireless technology, our options are endless. It’s where we’d most
expect it and where we’d least expect it—and everywhere in between. It
adapts to how we work and how we live, transforming everyday tasks into
everyday solutions. Surprising, nimble, ubiquitous. Seeking new applications
and finding new opportunities—everywhere we turn.
Technically,
Bluetooth is a specification for the use of low-power radio communications to wirelessly link phones, computers and other network devices over short distances. The name "Bluetooth" is borrowed from Harald Bluetooth, who was a king in Denmark more than 1,000 years ago
(Computer people choose the strangest names!). Bluetooth technology was designed primarily to support simple wireless networking of personal consumer devices and peripherals, including cell phones, PDAs,
and wireless headsets.
What Is LabelFlash? The Latest DVD
Laser Labeling Technology!
The Labelflash™ system burns pictures directly into a special layer added to
the non-data, or label, side of a DVD disc and eliminates the need for
special printers, and consumables such as ink.
High quality images on the disc label side:
Labelflash utilizes the existing recording laser in DVD-writers to burn high
contrast and high resolution images by changing the blue dye color to
colorless. Optimal image data processing is carried out in accordance with
the burning time, and pictures of high-resolution and high contrast can be
burned. Labelflash utilizes a newly developed, pick up and rotation
control, and high-speed signal processing system of image data. The special
Labelflash disc structure realizes the optimal focusing setting. Stable
burning of pictures can be completed in as little as 5 minutes.
Long-lasting, titles and pictures:
The picture-burning layer is located 0.6mm deep into the media and protected
by a polycarbonate layer. Images last longer since they cannot be touched
directly.
Labelflash disc features:
High-quality images can be burned on the
entire labeling surface.
With a Labelflash-compliant DVD drive,
you can burn a high contrast and resolution image by changing the blue dye
color to colorless and shading it using the same laser used for data
recording.
The dye used has high durability and
light-resistance, making it ideal for long-term storage.
Unrivaled compatibility with the drive:
The writing laser utilizes our independently developed “OXOLIFE” dye
coating.
Labelflash DVD discs utilize both photo
and organic synthesis technology thorough our independently developed
organic dye, “OXOLIFE.” This unique dye offers superb temperature/moisture
protection and light-resistance, making it ideal for highly-sensitive,
high-precision writing and long-term storage.
What is ExpressCard™ technology? ExpressCard technology is the name
of a new standard introduced by PCMCIA in spring 2003. The ExpressCard
standard delivers thinner, faster and lighter modular expansion to desktop
and notebook computer users. Consumers can add hardware capabilities such as
memory, wired and wireless communications cards and security devices by
simply inserting these modules into their systems. All ExpressCard slots
accommodate modules designed to use either Universal Serial Bus (USB*) 2.0,
or the emerging PCI*Express standards.
What Is USB 2.0?
USB 1.1 was great when it was introduced almost a decade ago. But
the newer USB 2.0 transfers data dramatically faster - up to 40 times
quicker. Plus, USB 2.0 provides additional bandwidth for multimedia and
storage applications, which are growing larger every year. Also to your
advantage is the fact that USB 2.0 is forward and backward compatible with
USB 1.1, which means that cables and connectors made for the original USB
configuration will also work perfectly in a USB 2.0 port, though some newer
devices are specifically designed for USB 2.0. It is always a good
idea to verify the version of USB supported by each device you want to use.
